The No. 11 Oregon Ducks, the preseason favorites to take the Pac-12 North, travel to Martin Stadium on Saturday to take on the post-Mike Leach Washington Cougars.

Oregon entered the season with the difficult task of replacing longtime starting quarterback and top-10 draft selection Justin Herbert but appears to have a worthy successor in redshirt sophomore Tyler Shough. In his 2020 debut, Shough completed 17 of his 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown, and a pick while adding 85 yards and another score on the ground. Shough could beat those numbers against Washington State.

Meanwhile, the Cougars come off the first win of the Nick Rolovich era, stomping Oregon State 38-28 on the road last week. Washington State trails Oregon in terms of both front-line talent and depth, but Rolovich’s offensive system has overcome such deficiencies before. Whether the players have bought in and internalized his scheme remains an open question. Rolovich will also have to prove he can recruit as well as Leach at a program that historically has struggled to attract the top talent in the state and surrounding regions.
