Week 11 of the college football season has been rocked by the coronavirus, with the highest number of canceled and postponed games so far this season. It’s difficult to keep track with games being shut down because of outbreaks but as of the middle of the day on Friday, there were 15 games rescheduled or postponed that were on the slate as of six days ago.
But let’s get to some of the games college football fans should be watching on Saturday and one to avoid. It’s not the greatest slate you’ll see this season, but there are some fun matchups to see.
Best game
The best game of the day will be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish heading on the road to take on the Boston College Eagles as 13.5-point favorites. This is the ultimate letdown spot for the Fighting Irish coming off the best win of the college football season, knocking off No. 1 Clemson at home. The Eagles are a scrappy bunch with former Notre Dame quarterback Phil Jurkovec lining up for Boston College. And keep in mind BC led Clemson by 18 points a couple weeks ago before the Tigers came back to win by six.
For a quick history lesson, Notre Dame took down No. 1 Florida State in 1993 and lost its very next game. The opponent? Boston College.
Sleeper game
Is America ready for an undefeated matchup between the Northwestern Wildcats and Purdue Boilermakers? Northwestern comes in with a 3-0 record ranked No. 23 in the country, already matching its season win total from 2019, while Purdue is 2-0 with one of its games canceled due to a coronavirus outbreak within the Wisconsin football program. The winner of this game will control its own destiny to represent the Big Ten West in the conference title game.
Worst game
Yes, we’re doing this. Move over, Illinois vs. Rutgers. The worst game of the weekend in college football will take place when the Penn State Nittany Lions head on the road to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon. Two of college football’s historic programs have yet to see a victory so far this season in five combined tries. Penn State is 0-3, coming off a blowout loss to Maryland, while Nebraska is 0-2 and likely would be an 0-3 team if not for Wisconsin canceling its matchup. Neither Penn State or Nebraska are relevant the rest of the season. Neither are going to fire their head coach, and neither has a whole lot of interesting aspects to the program. Take the season off watching these two teams and check them out in 2021.
