You’ve got to be patient with a lot of college football teams during the 2020 season. Covid-19, unusual practice times, changing schedules, and plenty of other factors mean this will be a year like no other.
But Penn State... what happened to you?
The AP Preseason #7 Penn State Nittany Lions had already lost to Indiana, Ohio State... and Maryland (what??).
And today PSU fell to the also-previously-winless Nebraska Cornhuskers 30-23 to drop to 0-4 in 2020.
The Huskers lead 27-6 at halftime, and despite a valiant attempt at a comeback it just fell short after another fourth down stop inside the red zone for the the Nebraska defense.
Freshman quarterback Luke McCaffery finished 13-21 for 132 yards, a touchdown pass and an interception. He’s quite raw, but Christian McCaffery’s brings plenty of athleticism to the position, adding in 13 carries for 67 yards and a rushing TD as well.
He’s an unpaid student-athlete, so let’s politely describe Nittany Lions quarterback Sean Clifford as “embattled.” He was benched after going 5-8 for 37 yards with an interception and a fumble that became a scoop and score for the Blackshirts. Will Levis replaced him and finished 14-31 for 219, looking more efficient in the second half. But he clearly isn’t allowed to attempt much of the playbook.
NU was a three-point underdog when this game started. Now they get their first win of 2020, while the nightmare continues in the ironically-named Happy Valley.
