In a turn of Pac-12 events, the Cal Bears will get their season started on Sunday morning local time when they head on the road to take on the UCLA Bruins. Cal had Saturday’s game against Arizona State canceled, and Utah canceled its game against UCLA, so the two teams were left without opponents and will meet on Sunday.
Cal did not play in last week’s game as its game against Washington was canceled, so it will finally get its season started. The Bears have gotten better record-wise in each of Justin Wilcox’s three seasons as the team’s head coach. After going 5-7 in his first year in 2017, Cal finished 7-6 in 2018 and 8-5 last season. The Bears have plenty of returning experience including 10 starters on offense led by quarterback Chase Garbers.
UCLA got its season started last weekend and suffered a loss to its former head coach Karl Dorrell and the Colorado Buffaloes 48-42. Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 20 of 40 passes for 303 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 109 yards on nine carries with a touchdown. The Bruins trailed 35-7 midway through the second quarter but came back to make it a seven-point game early in the third quarter, though it did not pull off the comeback.
Cal won the last game of this series 28-18 on the road in 2019.
