What Week 10 means for the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

Despite their bye, the Jets are still in command of the first overall pick. However, the Jaguars are likely to make it a race this week.

The good news for the New York Jets is that they cannot lose this week, but that’s because they’re on a bye. Still winless, they’ll be rooting for the Jaguars to win, keeping Gang Green in the driver’s seat for the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

This week, we’ve expanded our list to include the top eight spots in the draft order, i.e. all the teams with just two wins or less. After individual records, strength of schedule is the first tiebreaker for teams. Hat tip to Tankathon for providing that. Each team’s Week 10 opponent is listed as well.

  1. New York Jets: 0-9 (.000) — BYE
  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: 1-7 (.125) — @ Packers
  3. Dallas Cowboys: 2-7 (.222) — BYE
  4. New York Giants: 2-7 (.222) — vs. Eagles
  5. Washington Football Team: 2-6 (.250) — @ Lions
  6. Los Angeles Chargers 2-6 (.250) — @ Dolphins
  7. Houston Texans: 2-6 (.250) — @ Browns
  8. Cincinnati Bengals: 2-5-1: (.313) — @ Steelers

The Jaguars are big underdogs against the Packers this week, for obvious reasons. Assuming they lose, they’ll be able to keep the race for the top pick close. Next week, the Jags are looking at another loss, this time to the Steelers. That shifts attention to the Jets again, who will play the Chargers after their bye. That might be the most winnable game the Jets play for the rest of the season.

The NFC East is well represented here. The Giants play the Eagles (who only have three wins, but somehow lead the division) this week. A win would not only shake up the standings, it would likely put them out of the top five spots in the draft order, for now anyway.

According to odds makers, the Chargers have the best chance of winning among any of these teams. Los Angeles is a one-point underdogs to the Dolphins, but that somehow feels awfully generous.
