Update 3:50 p.m.: ESPN’s Dan Graziano is reporting the most optimistic recovery time for Brees is 2-3 weeks and in reality, “there is hope he’s back in time for playoffs.”
UPDATE: Sean Payton is not going to announce a starter between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill, according to Amie Just. That will make the waiver wire that much more of a crapshoot. I still think Winston is the guy, but Payton is not going to make this easy for us.
Fantasy football managers will have a new quarterback to consider on the waiver wire in Week 11. New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees suffered multiple rib fractures and a collapsed lung and his status for Week 11 and beyond is in question. Given the danger of lung injuries, odds seem decent he misses at least one game.
If that happens, Jameis Winston will get the start when the Saints host the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday. The rivalry can make for intense games, but the Falcons defense is atrocious enough that Winston gains considerable value as the Saints starting quarterback.
The one downside is Taysom Hill is guaranteed to get some work on designed QB keepers. It doesn’t mean you should pass on Winston, but it’s worth noting because it lowers his value a little bit. That being said, Hill is not worth adding in most fantasy leagues in part because of the limited of snaps he’ll see. He’s an intriguing flex option in super deep leagues, but otherwise you can pass.
Winston is currently rostered in 0.6 percent of leagues, but that number is sure to climb Wednesday morning after waivers runs. If you’re short a QB or are in a 2-QB league, he’s worth grabbing.
