The Miami Heat had the 20th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and selected Memphis PF Precious Achiuwa on Wednesday night virtually from ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. The Heat unexpectedly toppled the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Boston Celtics before falling to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. They’ll look to retool for 2020-21 in hopes of chasing another championship series.
Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro will likely be Miami’s top options on offense. Goran Dragic would be expensive to keep after the impressive postseason he had and the Heat are rumored to be pursuing a top-notch free agent like Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat have drafted extremely well in recent years and have excel at picking up under-the-radar talent in free agency. Achiuwa could fit right into the dynasty the Heat are looking to build.
First-round Pick Analysis
Achiuwa was a double-double monster in his lone season at Memphis and racked up 18 last season. There’s plenty of room for him to step in and become an impact player in Year 1 given Miami’s power forward situation. His tenacious rebounding and ability to score without needing plays drawn up for him could make him a viable second option behind Jae Crowder, if the Heat retain the PF via free agency. Derrick Jones Jr. is really more of a wing than a big. If there are any injuries to Miami’s bigs I could see Achiuwa racking up points as a hustle player who can make the most of limited minutes.
