The 49ers will be without Jimmy Garoppolo for an extended period of time, per Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo.

UPDATE: Garoppolo could need surgery, but Mike Garafolo is reporting the plan for now is to rest him and see if he can return in 4-6 weeks.

UPDATE: Garoppolo is expected to miss at least six weeks, and potentially more if he needs surgery, per Adam Schefter.

The San Francisco 49ers are likely going with one of their backup quarterbacks in Week 9 when they host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football. Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo are both reporting Jimmy Garoppolo is going to be sidelined an indefinite amount of time due to his high ankle sprain. It could result in him going on injured reserve, which requires a minimum three-week absence.

The 49ers have not named a starting quarterback for Week 9 yet, but Nick Mullens was the most recent backup. C.J. Beathard got some opportunities as well, but neither has shined in tough moments. Mullens looked good against a bad Giants team, but then struggled against the Eagles. Beathard made some plays in relief of Mullens against the Eagles and in relief of Garoppolo against the Dolphins, but was not overly impressive.

The 49ers are back for a walkthrough on Monday, likely a regular practice on Tuesday, and another walkthrough on Wednesday in preparation for the Packers.
