How and what to watch for Purdue vs. Minnesota

Purdue is coming off its first loss of the season, and Minnesota has been a mess all year.

It’s a battle to keep pace in the Big Ten West on Friday night as the 2-1 Purdue Boilermakers head to Minneapolis to take on the 1-3 Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Minnesota has not looked anything like it did just one year ago. Quarterback Tanner Morgan has had a rough time this season, throwing for just 769 yards in four games. He also has four touchdowns, which is the same number of interceptions he has. Despite the records of these teams, both of them are ranked fairly evenly in terms of SP+. Purdue comes in just five spots ahead of the Gophers. PJ Fleck and his crew have survived on offense thanks to a great rushing game led by Mohamed Ibrahim, who already has 10 scores on the season. The Boilermaker’s run defense is pretty good though, so he may have issues this week.

In West Lafayette, there are still some questions surrounding the elite talent that is wideout Rondale Moore. He opted back in for the season, but he has yet to see the field in 2020. Even without him, David Bell has been a playmaker with four touchdown catches and over 320 yards so far. But if Moore comes back, this team’s offense could explode.

The Best Bet

This game should be closer than the records indicate. The Rondale Moore factor is huge. If he can play, Purdue could walk away with this one easily, without him it should be a slugfest. Still, the Boilermakers have enough firepower to get the job done even if Moore has to wait another week to make his debut.

Pick: Purdue -3
