The Appalachian State Mountaineers will be taking on the No. 15-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET in Conway, SC. This particular matchup could a long way in deciding who wins the Sun Belt Conference and possibly being the highest-ranked Group of 5 school to play in a New Year’s Six bowl.

The Mountaineers (6-1) are currently one-game behind Coastal Carolina for first place in the Sun Belt’s East division and also riding a five-game winning streak. Last week, App St. squeaked out a tough 17-13 victory over the Georgia State Panthers. Mountaineers quarterback Zac Thomas completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 146 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also added 36 rushing yards to help out his team’s ground game.

Sophomore running back Camerun Peoples continued his touchdown streak last week, scoring a touchdown in now three-straight games. He led the Mountaineers with 67 rushing yards and a touchdown. Overall, App St. got outrushed by the Panthers to the tune of 148-131. The Mountaineers will likely be without starting sophomore running back Daetrich Harrington, who will be out for an extended time because of injury.

As for the Chanticleers (7-0), they’ve been flying under the radar this season in the Sun Belt. Coastal Carolina is coming off of a 23-6 victory over South Alabama last week. Freshman quarterback Grayson McCall had another efficient performance, completing 70.8 percent of his passes for 209 yards and a touchdown.

This season, the 6-foot-3 signal-caller is completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 1,393 yards, 16 touchdowns, and an interception. McCall will be looking to get the ball to junior wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh. The 6-foot-2 wideout is the team’s leading receiver with 35 receptions for 610 yards and six touchdowns. The Chanticleers know that if they want to play in a big-time bowl, it starts with them beating App State and then defeating No. 21-ranked Liberty to start off December.
