How and what to watch for No. 14 Oklahoma State vs. No. 18 Oklahoma

Oklahoma State will have to beat its in-state rival if it has any hope of keeping its slim CFP hopes alive

College Gameday will be in Norman this weekend to watch as the 5-1 Oklahoma State Cowboys try and knock off its in-state rival, the 5-2 Oklahoma Sooners Saturday night.

The Cowboys were one of the favorites to win the Big 12 coming into the season, and they’ve performed well. But its been on the strength of its defense, not its offense. Oklahoma State has the 8th ranked defense in the nation, according to SP+. It will need to be every bit as good as it has been this season as it takes on the fifth-best offense in the country by that same metric. The Sooner offense ranks in the top 30 of every single statistical category and ranks in the top 15 of many of the most important ones. The team’s passing success rate, which means they get half of what they need on first down, 70% on second and 100% on third downs, is ninth-best in the country. The Cowboys’ defense ranks fourth in stopping opposing teams from getting those successful plays however.

The Cowboy offense has been stunningly pedestrian this season. Running back Chuba Hubbard has had an underwhelming season so far. He’s still put up an impressive 581 yards and five scores, but its not as much as anybody expected for a preseason Heisman candidate. Quarterback Spencer Sanders dealt with an injury for a few weeks and aside from the barn burner against Texas, he’s had a season to forget. The Sooner defense started the season unable to stop any offense, but its since gotten much more stingy, ranked as the 43rd best unit in the nation per SP+. That doesn’t sound great, but based on where it was, it’s an improvement. The Sooners haven’t allowed an opposing team to score more than 28 points in the last month and the OU offense can score way more than that each week, making wins pretty easy recently .

The Best Bet

This game is one of the most anticipated Bedlam matchups in recent memory. The Cowboys defense is very good and have given lesser offenses a tough time this season. Still, the Sooner offense is operating on an elite level recently and QB Spencer Rattler has figured out his turnover issues that plagued him early in the season, making him even more lethal.

Plus history tells us Gundy won’t be able to keep it close with OU.

Pick: Oklahoma -7
