Friday update: The Dolphins have listed Tua Tagovailoa as questionable for Sunday due to his jammed thumb. If he cannot play, Ryan Fitzpatrick will get the start.
Thursday update: Tagovailoa was once again listed as limited in practice on Thursday. A jammed thumb shouldn’t preclude him from playing on Sunday, but we’ll wait and see what Friday’s final report tells us.
The Miami Dolphins quarterback situation got a bit messy in Week 11, and has a new issue in Week 12. Head coach Brian Flores elected to bench rookie Tua Tagovailoa as he struggled against the Denver Broncos, bringing in veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to try and bring the team back. Flores insisted after the game that Tagovailoa had not lost his starting job moving forward, but now the rookie is dealing with an injury.
Tagovailoa was listed as limited on the team’s Wednesday practice participation report with a left thumb injury. It turns out he jammed his thumb on a helmet during practice, according to Tom Pelissero. The injury is not viewed as serious, but it’s of note as the team prepares for Sunday’s game against the Jets.
This weekend provides a solid bounce-back spot for Tagovailoa given how bad the Jets are playing. Now it’s just a matter of getting his thumb healthy before Sunday.
