We’re back for Week 12 of the 2020 NFL regular season and it’s time for the holiday season! Thanksgiving brings with it the annual Thursday triple-header. This year we get Texans-Lions, Washington-Cowboys, and Ravens-Steelers. I don’t see any Survivor pool picks of worth given the nature of the matchups, but they each offer a little something — well, most of them do.
If you’ve never played in a Survivor pool, it’s a pretty straightforward deal. You pick one team each week that you think will win. If your team loses in Week 1, you’re eliminated (unless it’s a double elimination pool). If your team wins in Week 1, you can make a pick in Week 2. If your team wins in Week 2, you can make a pick in Week 3, and so on. The catch is that you cannot pick the same team twice. You could use a heavy favorite in Week 1, but you would not have access to them later in the year if you’re alive in the closing weeks.
Survivor pools are usually either a single elimination contest or a double elimination contest. I was in one of each and got eliminated from both in Week 5. But, we’re still here to help you win your pools with a look at safe choices, value choices, and potential traps. Last week, both safe picks (Steelers, Chargers) and the value pick (also the Chargers) made it through. Meanwhile, my trap pick (Vikings) lost, and likely took down a lot of remaining participants.
On to Week 12!
We’re into crunch time. There very few people still around in Survivor pools, and Week 12 might offer the lowest spreads of the year. We have no double digit spreads, and so you might as well stick with picking against the two worst teams in the NFL. The Dolphins and Browns will prove to be popular picks, but it’s not time to get cute.
Best value picks
Dolphins over Jets
Browns over Jaguars
Division games, even at home, are a tough call. I think the Packers and Rams probably win these games, but I don’t feel comfortable enough to roll the dice on either in a Survivor pool.
