Friday update: Gio Bernard got in two straight full practices and has been removed from the final injury report. He is good to go for Week 12.
The Cincinnati Bengals had some unexpected news on Wednesday of Week 12, with running back Gio Bernard sitting out practice due to a concussion. It is not clear when Bernard suffered a concussion, but it did not bode well for Sunday given the timeline of the protocol.
On Thursday, however, Bernard was back at practice in limited form. He likely is still in the concussion protocol, but getting a limited workout means he is making progress and thus trending toward playing on Sunday against the New York Giants. He will need to remain asymptomatic leading up to the active/inactive decision on Sunday.
Bernard is the team’s starting running back with Joe Mixon sidelined on injured reserve with a foot injury. Samaje Perine moved into the backup role and would get the start on Sunday if Bernard did not progress through the protocol. Perine is worth a waiver add if you have a free roster spot, but if you face a roster crunch, you probably shouldn’t use a flyer on Perine with Bernard now trending toward playing.
