How and what to watch for No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 25 North Carolina

One slip up by the Irish can cause chaos at the top of the CFP rankings

The undefeated No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will put its winning streak on the line when they travel down to Chapel Hill to face the No. 25 North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday.

North Carolina has a big play offense that averages close to 600 yards per game. The ‘Heels rank in high in every metric, including explosive passes and runs (meaning passes of 16+ yards and runs of 12+). The boys in Carolina Blue have the most explosive offense overall in the nation thanks to quarterback Sam Howell, and a running game led by Javonte Williams and Michael Carter who both have over 800 yards on the ground this season.

Notre Dame’s offense is no slouch either, ranking in the top 30 in all offensive categories except passing explosiveness. They average 233.5 yards per game rushing, which is the same as UNC. But Mack Brown’s run defense has struggled this season, so they could get even more this week.

The deciding factor in this game might be when the ND defense goes head-to-head with the Carolina offense, as UNC hasn’t faced a defense that’s even close to the Irish. Notre Dame is one of the most stingy units in the nation, keeping opposing offenses behind schedule close to 70% of the time, and allowing just two teams to run for more than 100 yards. They do allow some explosive plays, but it’s still far and away the best crew on the schedule to this point for the Heels.

The Best Bet

This is probably one of the best games of the weekend, and has massive implications for the top of the ACC and CFP rankings. Both teams will score a ton of points, and even if the Irish stop UNC’s potent ground game, Howell can still sling it with the best of them.

Pick: Over 69.5
