The East Carolina Pirates will close out their 2020 season with a home game with the SMU Mustangs. ECU considered adding another game next weekend but ultimately decided to finish their season on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates will enter this one with a 2-6 overall record and 2-5 in AAC play, which is tied for eighth place in the 11-team conference. The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak last weekend when they beat one-win Temple 28-3. East Carolina’s biggest struggles are coming on the defensive side of the ball, which ranks 103rd in opponent yards per play. Rushing defense is the main issue, but the pass defense isn’t all that better.
SMU has a 7-2 overall record including 4-2 in the AAC for third place in the conference behind Cincinnati and Tulsa. Unfortunately for East Carolina, SMU’s high-powered offense is its strength, so the Mustangs should have no issues moving the ball. The Ponies rank 17th in yards per play offensively led by quarterback Shane Buechele, who somehow remains a quarterback in college football after roughly a decade in the sport.
SMU won the last two games of this series including a 59-51 victory in Dallas in 2019.

The Best Bet
Wow, East Carolina isn’t getting a whole lot of respect from the betting public. Well it’s for good reason because SMU is going to cover this spread with ease. Maybe the Mustangs passing game isn’t as scary as it was before star receiver Reggie Roberson Jr., but SMU is a quality football program and East Carolina isn’t. Generally I like to take the good teams to cover against the bad teams. We’ll see if the bold strategy pays off on Saturday.
Pick: SMU -12.5
