How and what to watch for Virginia vs. Florida State

The Cavs are going on a bit of a roll, while the ‘Noles continue to struggle.

Update 11:20 a.m.: This game has been postponed by The ACC due to Covid-19.

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that today’s Virginia at Florida State football game has been postponed.

The rescheduling follows positive tests, subsequent quarantining, and contact tracing within the Florida State football team. The team is adhering to the outlined protocols within the ACC Medical Advisory Group report, which is available on theACC.com (full report).

As the 2-6 Florida State Seminoles continue to struggle finding any type of success, they welcome the resurgent 4-4 Virginia Cavaliers to town on Saturday night.

Like the vast majority of first-year head coaches, Mike Norvell has had a tough time trying to take over a team in the midst of a global pandemic. FSU has struggled to score points and has had a hard time stopping opponents from scoring. They average just 22 points per game and has topped out at 28 points in a shocking win over North Carolina. The ground game is the team’s lone saving grace thanks to quarterback Jordan Travis and running backs La’Damian Webb and Jashaun Corbin. The unit ranks 26th in the nation in staying on track when it runs the ball and has the 7th most runs of 12+ yards in the country.

Its passing game is the polar opposite, one of the least productive and least explosive squads in the country through the air. It will be a good-on-good matchup though, as UVA is one of the best at limiting overall rushing success, though it gives up chunk plays on the ground at a higher clip than most.

The Virginia offense is nine points better than FSU’s on a weekly basis, and has scored over 30 in each of the last three games they’ve played. The ‘Hoos aren’t explosive at all, but the unit is efficient staying ahead of the chains better 43% of the time. The Seminole defense lets its opponents stay ahead of them too, on close to 50% of plays teams get the yards they need to be successful.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Virginia -8.5
Point Total: 58.5
Money line: Virginia -286, FSU +225

  • UVA has been good to people betting on them to cover, the Cavs are 4-1 ATS in its last five
  • The over has hit on all but two of Virginia’s last 14 games
  • The over seems nice here, as Florida State has hit the over in five of its last seven
  • The Noles struggle to cover too, going just 2-9 ATS in its last 11

Betting splits

Virginia: (89% of handle, 53% percent of bets)
FSU: (11% of handle, 47% percent of bets)

The Best Bet

I don’t trust FSU to score enough points for the over to hit, but I do trust them enough to lose by more than one score to a UVA team that’s getting hot.

Pick: Virginia -8.5
