How and what to watch for Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss

The most interesting Egg Bowl in quite awhile.

It’s going to be pretty difficult to match the entertainment of last season’s Egg Bowl that made drastic changes across college football in Mississippi and beyond, but they’re doing their best. Since Ole Miss wide receiver Elijah Moore’s fake urinating incident, the Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State Bulldogs brought in two of the most entertaining head coaches with Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach. This should be an incredibly fun battle every year moving forward. This is Year 1.

Ole Miss has been among the most exciting offenses to watch in college football this season, averaging 6.9 yards per play, which ranks 11th in the country. Kiffin is known for his genius in the passing game, and that’s where the Rebels rank No. 4 in yards per pass attempt. However, defensively is about as bad as it gets for Ole Miss. The Rebels rank No. 123 among 127 competing FBS teams this season in opponent yards per play.

On the Mississippi State side it has been just the opposite, which is another reason this game should be pretty exciting. The Bulldogs’ offense has been a mess for most of the season, while they have played very well defensively. Mississippi State ranks dead last in the SEC in yards per play on offense but is third in the conference in yards per play allowed.

Mississippi State won the last two games of this series including a 21-20 victory at home in 2019.

The Best Bet

What we’ve learned through a sizeable sample is Ole Miss has a very good offense but a very bad defense, and Mississippi State’s offense is awful but the defense is very good. With all these combinations going against each other, I cannot trust either team to win this game big, so we’re going to go with Mississippi State in a rivalry game. This one could go in a variety of different ways, but expecting an Ole Miss blowout victory seems unlikely.

Pick: Mississippi State +9.5
