Though it might not be in the famous Lahaina Civic Center in Hawai’i this year, the Maui Classic is still with us thanks to the tournament being transferred to the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. No beaches, but plenty of slot machines now!
As per usual it draws one of the best fields in all of college basketball, with eight teams all thinking about the NCAA Tournament involved this year. North Carolina returns, and three times when they’ve won the Maui, they’ve gone on to win the NCAA Championship. And this year it’s just a 3.5 hour drive down I-40.
This is a single-elimination tournament, but losing teams will continue to play each other every day so that all teams will eventually play three games.
