UPDATE: ESPN is airing their bowl game announcement show on Sunday, December 20. The show started at noon and the first games announced are the College Football Playoff matchups. The Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl are hosting the semifinals, although the Rose Bowl is taking place at AT&T Stadium in Texas due to California COVID-19 restrictions. We’ll be updating all the details of bowl matchups below as they are announced.
Because of COVID-19 and the chaos that has been the 2020 college football season, there will be less bowl games than usual to close the season. Because all teams are eligible for a bowl regardless of record, prestige, or health, we can expect many of the usual game tie-ins to be moved around quite a bit.
Right now there are bowl projections for 2-8 South Carolina going to a bowl game, which means we’re looking at teams that have no business playing in the postseason likely taking away spots from those that are worthy. Power Five schools that want the extra practice time or revenue to eat up as many available spots as they wish, regardless of the usual bowl contracts and conference affiliations.
But here’s what we know so far about the college football bowl season in 2020 and headed into 2021.
