Friday PM update: Sean Payton wouldn’t commit to Brees playing, but ESPN’s Dianna Russini has learned that both Brees and Michael Thomas will play Sunday night.
Friday PM update: Sean Payton is playing it close to the vest on Brees’ status for their Sunday night game against the Buccaneers:
Sean Payton when asked if Drew Brees or Mike Thomas would play Sunday: "We'll see. I thought we had a good week of preparation. And we'll wait 'til gameday."

FWIW, I think both will play
Friday update: Drew Brees was participating in practice on Friday, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett. Unless new information comes out, this is a great sign for him to be behind center against the Buccaneers. He should also get Michael Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders back this week, which can only help his fantasy upside in a tough matchup.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was limited on Wednesday with a shoulder injury and it looks like he will be limited again on Thursday. Brees was seen working on the side without pads on Thursday, per ESPN’s Mike Triplett.
We’ll see if he can get a padded practice in on Friday, but there’s no doubt that this is something of concern for the team, as they try to get Brees ready while also not overworking his shoulder. New Orleans also gets a tough matchup with a strong pass rushing Buccaneers defense. Brees will see pressure in this game, and can’t prepare for a relatively easy time inside the pocket.
The Saints do have a good backup in Jameis Winston, which could make it easier to sit Brees if they feel he needs more rest, but for now, Brees is still the likely starter. Though, I wouldn’t be averse to grabbing Winston off of waivers preemptively, especially if you have Brees as your fantasy starter.
