How and what to watch for Maryland vs. Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions will try to capture their first win of the season when they take on the Maryland Terrapins Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in University Park, PA.

The Nittany Lions (0-2) are in must-win territory after losing to the No. 3-ranked Ohio State 38-25 last week at home. Penn State started out slow as Ohio State jumped out to a 21-6 first-half lead. Starting the second half Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford hit wide receiver Jahan Dotson for a touchdown, cutting the Buckeyes lead to 21-13. However, that was the closest Penn State got as Justin Fields and company were just too much for them.

The Nittany Lions do not have to play Ohio State this week, but need to be prepared for an upset-minded Maryland squad. Last week the Terrapins pulled off a miraculous 17-point comeback to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 45-44 in overtime. After a rough opening weekend, freshman quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa compiled 453 yards of total offense and five touchdowns. He also got help from senior running back Jake Funk, who erupted for 221 yards for 21 carries and a touchdown.

The Terrapins will need this type of performance, especially from their offense, if they want to defeat the Nittany on the road. In their last five contests, Penn State has won all five games.

The Best Bet

Every time I see a point spread over 20 points, I immediately get bettor beware vibes because this is in-conference college football. As of now, the Lions are 26.5 point favorites, which I can’t see them doing because of what we saw from in Week 1 against the Hoosiers. I don’t see the Terrapins winning in State College either, but they can find a cover.

Pick: Maryland +26.5, Under 64
