How and what to watch for Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi State

Both programs have struggled mightily throughout the 2020 season.

Residing in the basement of the SEC standings, the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Mississippi State Bulldogs will try to get out of their respective funks when the two cross-division foes collide in Starkville on Saturday.

From an initial high to embarrassing lows, State fans have already run the full gamut of the Mike Leach Experience in just a little over a month, and their struggles continued last week when they were promptly reduced to dust with a 41-0 loss to Alabama. True freshman quarterback Will Rogers understandably struggled against the Tide, throwing for only 147 yards on 37 passing attempts and two picks.

The Commodores woes continued last week as they were lit up by Ole Miss 54-21, with Rebel QB Matt Corral going a ridiculous 31-of-34 through the air for 412 yards and six touchdowns. The only shining light was their own true freshman Ken Seals throwing for 319 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the loss.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Vanderbilt at Mississippi State (-19.5)
Point Total: O/U 44.5
Money line: Vanderbilt (+950), Mississippi State (-2000)

  • Each of Mississippi State’s last seven games at Davis Wade Stadium have gone UNDER the total points line.
  • Mississippi State has covered the spread in each of its last six November games against non-AP-ranked teams.
  • Vanderbilt has covered the spread only 33.9% of the time as an underdog since 2014.

Betting splits

Vanderbilt: (32% of handle, 55% percent of bets)
Mississippi State: (68% of handle, 45% percent of bets)

The Best Bet

The SEC caught on to Leach’s Air Raid quickly with the Bulldogs combining for only points total for the last three games. The offense has also coughed up a total of 19 turnovers through just five games.

However, Vanderbilt has been horrendous on both sides of the ball, giving up an average of 45.3 points over their last three outings while mustering only 4.4 yards per play on offense this year.

It’s the stoppable force vs. the moveable object in the SEC, and I don’t believe both teams combined will have enough firepower to hit an over.

Pick: Under 44.5
