On Saturday night the 0-1 New Mexico Lobos travel way out west to take on the 1-1 Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at 11 p.m.
Last week in their opener, New Mexico got destroyed by the San Jose State Spartans. They struggled defensively, allowing nearly 600 total yards, 481 of them were through the air. Luckily for the Lobos, Hawaii’s passing offense is its weakness, throwing for just 339 yards through two games. New Mexico will need to lean on quarterback Tevaka Tuioti, who had close to 300 yards and two scores in his 2020 debut.
Hawaii’s defense will present a challenge for the Lobos. While New Mexico puts up big numbers through the air, that could be tough against a Rainbow Warriors defense that only gives up 200 yards per game in the air. Hawaii gives up 200 yards on the ground as well, which is a much bigger deal than 200 yards in the air. New Mexico may look to run more since they’re facing a susceptible defense, but they haven’t found anybody to have success on the ground yet. Still we only have one game of information on them, and it’s hard to say anything definitively.
Hawaii’s offense averages 223 yards per game on the ground. Look for Michael Reed to have a good game, though the Lobos defense held SJSU to under 100 total yards on the ground last week.
