One way or another, the Dallas Cowboys expect to start their fourth different quarterback of the season for Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The news follows a lackluster performance by the team’s most recent starter, rookie Ben DiNucci. Tom Pelissero is reporting it will be Garrett Gilbert over Cooper Rush, but we’ll see.
While the final decision on a starter might not occur until game day, the Cowboys have little reason to expect better results than what they have received from their quarterbacks following Dak Prescott’s season-ending ankle injury.
Fantasy Football analysis: Cowboys QBs Garrett Gilbert, Cooper Rush
Garrett Gilbert, signed last month off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, hasn’t received extended work on the field since his stint in the now-defunct AAF. Though he has a decent pedigree as a former starter for the Texas Longhorns and SMU Mustangs, Gilbert never established himself in the NFL. Sunday would mark his first career start in the league.
By contrast, Cooper Rush has a much longer relationship with the Cowboys, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017. Outside of a brief stint with the New York Giants earlier this year, Rush has spent his entire professional career in Dallas. Even so, he has only attempted three passes in the NFL and, like Gilbert, has yet to start a game in the league.
Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation
Do not start any Cowboys quarterback this week.
