How and what to watch for Florida Atlantic vs. Southern Miss

FAU will be looking to get right after only their second loss of the season, while Southern Miss will be trying to put on a show for its new head coach.

After a tough loss last weekend, the 5-2 Florida Atlantic Owls will look to get back on track against a 2-7 Southern Miss Golden Eagles team that just hired a new head coach.

Breaking from tradition for a normal Willie Taggart coached team, the Owls have struggled on offense this season putting up just 18.4 points per game. Last week they were only able to hang a mere field goal in a loss to Georgia Southern. However the FAU defense has been playing lights out, allowing opposing teams just 12 points each week. They’ve conceded just seven total touchdowns on the season through as many weeks and limit opposing offenses to under 300 total yards on average, a pretty impressive feat regardless of what type of competition you’re playing.

Southern Miss will probably have a ton of issues, like they tend to have every game. The Golden Eagles are giving up over 400 yards and 35 points per game and have lost four out of their last five games. The one win in that span was an eight-point victory against FCS’s North Alabama. The offense tends to put up more points each week than FAU’s, but the Owl defense will more than likely stifle the unit that isn’t particularly great in any facet of the game. They try and exploit the opposing defenses weakness, but FAU doesn’t have anything overwhelming to attack.

This will be the first game since Tulane offensive coordinator Will Hall has been introduced as head coach, and it will be his first chance to evaluate his roster in person.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: FAU (-8.5) vs Southern Miss
Point Total: 43.5
Money line: FAU (-345), Southern Miss (+270)

  • The Owls have a good defense and an ‘eh’ offense, a recipe to hit the under. It’s gone that way six of the last seven games FAU has played.
  • Willie Taggart and company are a good bet against the spread, going 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games.
  • Southern Miss have been a horrible team to trust, going 3-9 ATS in their last 12.
  • Though a common theme here is the under hitting, the Golden Eagles haven’t hit the point total in five of their last six games.

Betting splits

FAU: (88% of handle, 80% percent of bets)
Southern Miss: (12% of handle, 20% percent of bets)

The Best Bet

This is an easy one. Even though Southern Miss has a bad defense, FAU has a bad offense paired with a great defense. That’s a surefire way to hit the under, even if the point total is low.

Pick: Under 43.5
