Game day update: Rather than lean on a younger, more talented Ty Johnson, the Jets seem intent on splitting the workload between him and Frank Gore, which depresses the fantasy production for both. ESPN projects 9.67 fantasy points for Gore and 9.24 for Johnson. Gore is listed as questionable due to his concussion but is expected to play on Sunday.
The New York Jets’ backfield situation was a little complicated in the middle of the week. Ageless veteran Frank Gore, who is in the league’s concussion protocol, sat out Thursday’s practice after getting in some work the day before. It’s not a great sign for his availability this week, but it does give Ty Johnson some more value in fantasy football.
Fantasy Football analysis: Jets RBs Frank Gore, Ty Johnson
Gore left last week’s game against the Raiders early, and the Jets turned to Johnson. He finished the game with 104 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, adding another 13 yards on two catches. Even with Gore active, the Jets would clearly be better off leaning on Johnson as a No. 1 running back, but the team seems intent on giving the 37-year-old reps despite the team’s desperate need to turn the page toward 2021.
There’s a decent chance that Gore will play this week against the Seahawks, according to the head coach himself. If that’s the case, Johnson’s fantasy value would be limited to a Flex/RB3. But if Gore is out, Johnson’s a solid RB2.
Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation
Start Ty Johnson. Sit Frank Gore.
