Even the strangest season in the history of college football will not stop the Army Black Nights and Navy Midshipmen from playing their annual showdown.
Originally scheduled to take place in Philadelphia, this year’s Army-Navy game will instead take place at West Point, a move prompted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This marks the first time West Point has hosted the game since World War II.
As for the game itself, Army enters as the clear favorite, having won seven of the nine games the program pieced together in the aftermath of pandemic cancellations. And while the Midshipmen’s triple-option offense can give teams trouble, the Black Knights’ most recent victory came over the Georgia Southern Eagles, another triple-option program.
Conversely, Navy has endured a difficult 2020. After kicking off the season with a 55-3 drubbing at home to the BYU Cougars, the Midshipmen have only pulled out three wins, none by more than four points. Navy also hasn’t emerged victorious since mid-October, having lost each of their past four games. Neither Navy’s offense nor defense ranks higher than No. 98 in Football Outsiders’ F+ metric entering the week.
