Alex Smith’s comeback has been one of the more pleasant surprises of the 2020 NFL season. However, his return to a starting job, albeit a temporary one, has not been of much help in fantasy football. He won’t have much appeal as a starter this week against the 49ers, the team that took him with the first overall pick in 2005.
Fantasy Football analysis: Washington QB Alex Smith
Smith had 296 passing yards and one touchdown last week in the Washington Football Team’s upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was his third game in a row with one touchdown, though he has not thrown for multiple scores at all this season.
The 49ers have allowed three opposing quarterbacks to toss four touchdowns in three of their last five games. However, those were all potential MVPs this season. The two games in between, this unit allowed just one touchdown. I would leave Smith on the bench. There’s just not enough upside to start him unless you’re out of options.
Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation
Sit Alex Smith.
