An abbreviated 2020 Mountain West season will come to its conclusion on Saturday in Las Vegas when the No. 24 San Jose State Spartans do battle with the Boise State Broncos in the league championship game.
Like Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt, SJSU has been a pleasant surprise this season with them posting an undefeated 6-0 regular season mark to earn their first national ranking since 2012. The Spartans officially clinched a spot in their first conference title game last week in a 30-20 victory over Nevada. Despite trailing by 13 at the half, Brent Brennan’s squad relied on the legs of Tyler Nevens and two fumble recoveries by the defense to blank the Wolf Pack in the second half and seal the comeback win. Nevens finished with a career-high 184 yards on just 12 carries and a touchdown.
Boise State finds themselves in the familiar terrain of playing for a Mountain West championship and while not having the attention they usually garner as a G5 contender, they still turned in a solid 5-1 regular season in which they held opposing quarterbacks to under 58 percent completed passes in five of their six contests. Wyoming was unable to move the ball at all in a snowstorm last week as Boise came away with a 17-9 victory.
