Cam Newton is banged up ahead of his team’s Week 13 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. The New England Patriots signal-caller was limited in practice on Wednesday because of an abdomen injury, according to NESN’s Doug Kyed. Newton hasn’t been great throwing the football this season but both of his backups could be significant downgrades.
Newton ranks 23rd in passing yards and has throw just four touchdown passes and nine picks through 10 starts. He’s also run for nine scores and his athleticism has been key for a Patriots offense that’s short on playmakers. Jarrett Stidham is more likely to fill in for Newton than Brian Hoyer under center.
Stidham has only thrown for 124 yards this season with one touchdown pass and three interceptions. He replaced Newton when he was pulled against the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year but hasn’t shown that he’s able to lead an offense through an entire game this year.
