The Ball State Cardinals (6-1) capped off their regular season with a MAC championship win over the previously undefeated the Buffalo Bulls. The Cardinals’ defense was the first to contain Bulls running back Jaret Patterson, holding him to a season-low of 47 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Offensively, Cardinals quarterback Drew Plitt outplayed Bulls quarterback Kyle Vantrease. Plitt was 20-of-32 for 273 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. This season he has completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,947 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The 22nd-ranked San Jose State Spartans (7-0) defeated the Boise State Broncos 34-20 to win the Mountain West Conference championship. The Spartans got a tremendous performance from quarterback Nick Starkel, who has been one of the main reasons why SJSU is undefeated. Starkel was 32-of-52 for 453 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. This season, he’s completing 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,906 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. It should be fun to see him and Plitt battle in Tucson, AZ.
