Breaking down triple-double futures odds for 2020-21 NBA season

We examine three players who might have a chance to take the triple-double crown from Luka Doncic for the 2020-21 NBA regular season.

With only less than a week away from the start of the 2020-21 NBA regular season, it is a perfect time to look at some player futures odds, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. As always, there’s a lot of good odds from points per game to leading scorer that you can throw a couple of dollars on.

Today, we are going to look a few players’ triple-double odds and discuss if they have a good chance of taking the crown from Dallas Mavericks superstar guard Luka Doncic. Last season, Doncic had 17, snapping Russell Westbrook’s five-year streak of holding the title.

1. Nikola Jokic, C, Nuggets — +800

Despite having the fourth-best odds, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is in the perfect situation to rack up a lot of triple-doubles. Last season, Jokic had 13 triple-doubles and a ridiculous 43 double-doubles. He almost averaged 19.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 7.0 assists in 32 minutes per game. Basketball Reference projects the 25-year-old center to average almost another triple-double this season, which makes sense considering that Denver has Jamal Murray, Gary Harris Jr., Will Barton, Bol Bol and Michael Porter Jr.

2. Ben Simmons, PG, Sixers — +1100

Last season, Ben Simmons had six triple-doubles, but could have had more if the Philadelphia 76ers provided more shooting around him. The versatile, two-way point guard averaged 16.4 points, 8.0 assists, and 7.8 rebounds in 35.4 minutes per game. Just like Jokic, Simmons is a walking triple-double and could snatch the crown from Doncic. He can drive to the basket at will and has shooters around him such as Seth Curry and Danny Green to kick it out on the perimeter.

3. Russell Westbrook, PG, Wizards — +500

Out of three players on this list, Westbrook has the third best odds to challenge Doncic for the triple-double crown. The only player that stands in front of him is LeBron James, who has great roster around him in Los Angeles. But unlike in Houston where he was almost sharing ball-handling duties with James Harden, Westbrook will have the keys to the point guard car in D.C.

As previously mentioned, Westbrook had a streak, where he had five seasons with the most triple-doubles. At his size, the former MVP is a ferocious rebounder and can get to the basket with relative ease. With the Wizards, he has a perfect backcourt partner in Bradley Beal, who he can dish it to and pick up a ton of assists. The only thing that could hold Westbrook back from the most triple-doubles is his streak offense and questionable shot selection.
