How and what to watch for Camellia Bowl: Marshall vs. Buffalo

Both teams are looking to avenge losses in their conference championship games.

NCAA Football: Dollar General Bowl-Buffalo vs Troy John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

We got some Christmas Day bowl action as the 5-1 Buffalo Bulls take on the 7-2 Marshall Thundering Herd in the Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.

Buffalo was rolling over opponents with ease up until the MAC title game against Ball State, where they just couldn’t seem to get anything going on the ground. A lack of run game and some critical turnovers forced UB to hang an L in their record for the first time all season. It could be another tough day for the Bulls as they take on a Marshall defense that gives up less than 100 yards per game on the ground. The team from WNY isn’t built to pass the ball a ton, so without a good game from RBs Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks, it could be a long day for them.

The Thundering Herd are on a two-game losing streak and have scored just 13 total points in that span. Even with the two poor performances, the defense has still played well. They’ve only given up 20 or more points twice this year. The Buffalo defense is solid, but their schedule has been very weak this season, so it’s doubtful they’ll be able to hold the ‘Herd under 17 points. If UB wants any chance to win they’re going to have to find a crack in this very strong MU run defense.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Marshall vs Buffalo (-4.5)
Point Total: 54.5
Money line: Marshall (+155), Buffalo (-200)

  • Marshall’s offense was very good for most of the season, so they’ve hit the over seven of their last 10 times out.
  • The Thundering Herd have never lost a game straight up against Buffalo (6-0)
  • Until the MAC title game, UB’s offense was on a roll. They’ve hit the over in nine of their last 12 games.
  • The Bulls are solid against the spread too, going 11-3 ATS in their last 14.

The Best Bet

Marshall has been struggling in recent weeks, but their defense has still played well. UB needs to find a way to get production out of the run game against this stingy run-stopping defense and I’m not sure I see it happening.

Pick: Marshall +4.5
