The New York Mets have signed Trevor May, taking the star relief pitcher off of the free agency market. May is signing a two-year contract worth $15.5 million.
The 31-year-old reliever has spent the last six seasons with the Minnesota Twins. This past season, May had an ERA of 3.86, 1.15 WHIP, and recorded 38 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched. He also posted a career-high 14.7 strikeouts per 9.0, which is amazing to think about because May is only three years removed from Tommy John surgery.
The veteran reliever should be able to help out a Mets’ bullpen that struggled at times in the shortened season. New York was right around league average in save percentage with 61 percent. With a lot of question marks surrounding their bullpen and a new owner in charge in Steve Cohen, New York made sure to get one of the best relievers on the market.
May came up in the Phillies system, where he spent a few seasons in the minor leagues before being traded in 2012 to the Twins.
