No. 8 BYU vs. No. 14 Coastal Carolina is a go for this weekend

When the Chanticleers lost an opponent this weekend to Covid-19, it opened up an opportunity to add one of the best college football games of the year.

One of the best college football games of the year will be added on 48 hours notice, as the No. 8 BYU Cougars will face the No. 14 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The decision comes following the last-minute cancelation of the Liberty-Coastal Carolina matchup scheduled for this weekend.

The Cougars (9-0) have a nice ranking from the AP Poll, but are just 13th according to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee as of Tuesday’s rankings. The knock has been their strength of schedule, where their best wins are over Houston and an injured Boise State. The Chants (9-0) beat Kansas 38-23 in the season opener, and have handled the Sun Belt with aplomb since.

The game gives BYU a better chance of making a New Year’s Six game as an at-large, which could be granted if they finish the season around the Top 10 depending on which teams win conference championships in the Power Five conferences. For Coastal, a high-quality victory might give them a shot at the NY6 automatic bid given to the best Group of Five conference champion.

This game has tremendous upside for both teams, as millions of actual dollars and even more in exposure would be available by making one of the biggest bowl games available. It will also assist with the narrative that both teams have done everything they can to crack the ceiling placed on them by the current postseason system in college football.

The game is scheduled for this Saturday, December 5th at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
