How and what to watch for San Jose State vs. Hawaii

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in Santa Clara County, this is now a home matchup for the Warriors.

Fresh off toppling previously undefeated Nevada, the Hawaii Warriors are riding high and will have an impromptu home game on Saturday when welcoming the San Jose State Spartans to the islands.

Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro had himself an efficient showing in leading the Warriors to a 24-21 upset of the Wolfpack last Saturday, going 26-of-32 through the air for 246 yards and a touchdown on top of using his legs to the tune of 62 yards and a score on the ground. On the other side, Hawaii’s defense limited Nevada QB Carson Strong and the normally explosive Wolfpack offense to just 168 passing yards on 20 completions for the evening.

San Jose State, meanwhile, will be returning to the field for the first time in three weeks and are in a precarious situation. Originally set to host the Warriors, the Spartans were forced to travel to Honolulu due to new COVID-19 guidelines in Santa Clara County.

At 4-0, SJSU has won all of their outings by double-digits.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: San Jose State (-2.5) vs. Hawaii
Point Total: 60.5

  • San Jose State covered as a 7.5 point underdog in last year’s matchup between the two programs. The OVER of 78.5 hit in a 42-40 Hawaii victory.
  • Hawaii is 2-2 against the spread as an underdog this season.
  • In the 10 combined games between San Jose State and Hawaii this season, the UNDER has hit seven times.

The Best Bet

The tandem of quarterback Nick Starkel and receiver Bailey Gaither has allowed San Jose State to be ranked 12th in passing success rate through four games.

To counter that, the Hawaii defense is currently ranked 26th in defensive passing success rate, keeping opposing offenses behind schedule on passing downs. They did an effective job at limiting Carson Strong last week and with this virtual toss-up being at home, they may come through once again.

Pick: Hawaii (+2.5)
