The No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs and No. 2 Baylor Bears will not play today in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in a much-anticipated matchup due to Covid-19.
#BREAKING : Baylor-Gonzaga is cancelled.
— Darby Brown (@darbyjobrown) December 5, 2020
Joint statement from Baylor and Gonzaga basketball programs: Following surveillance testing for COVID-19, one student-athlete and one non-student-athlete of the Gonzaga men’s basketball travel party produced positive results.
Gonzaga had issues with Covid-19 amongst their travel party and potentially the team as well while in Florida for the Fort Myers Tip-Off last weekend where they played Kansas and Auburn. Both Gonzaga (defeating West Virginia 87-82 ) and Baylor (defeating Illinois 82-69) played on Wednesday night in Indianapolis, and both teams agreed to stay in town to create one of the better regular season matchups you’ll see.
But unfortunately 2020 got in the way, and because of the difficulty with travel and scheduling this season it’s unlikely this game will get made up anytime soon. The Bears are scheduled to begin Big 12 play next Sunday against Texas, while the Zags have Tarleton State, Southern, Northern Arizona, and Dixie State as their next victims opponents before opening their West Coast Conference schedule with San Francisco on January 2nd.
