Usually around this time of the year, we would be getting ready for championship weekend and then bowl season. But due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, those things have been pushed back for another week. Nevertheless, we still have an idea on who are the top six teams in college football that have a chance to compete in the College Football Playoff and ultimately win the national title.
We will be looking at how Clemson, Notre Dame, Alabama, and others performed in Week 14 and where they stand on the betting lines heading into Week 15. If you want to see the current national champion odds, you can check them out at DraftKings Sportsbook.
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (9-0) Odds: from +125 to +100
Before the Crimson Tide played the LSU Tigers on Saturday, their odds to win the national championship were +125. Alabama, who looks like the best team in the country, dominated the defending national champion LSU Tigers by a score of 55-17. With the win, they secured their berth into the SEC Championship game and improved their national title odds to +100.
The Crimson Tide, led by quarterback Mac Jones, should be able to get by Arkansas next week, which sets up a colossal matchup in the SEC title game against the Florida Gators.
2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-0) Odds: from +600 to +700
Unlike Alabama, whose odds improved, the Fighting Irish saw their odds take a slight hit. Notre Dame, who is competing in the ACC this season, has already clinched their bid in the ACC title game and defeated Syracuse 45-21 on Saturday. Fighting Irish quarterback Ian Book had another phenomenal game with 338 total yards and five total touchdowns.
Notre Dame will be able to improve their odds likely for the last time this season when they play Clemson in a rematch from a few weeks ago in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 19.
3. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0) Odds: from +550 to +450
Despite having a couple of games postponed this season, the Ohio State Buckeyes not only have better odds than Notre Dame to win the national title, but the Buckeyes saw their odds increase from +550 last week after they defeated Michigan State 52-12.
The Buckeyes did not leave any doubt within the selection committee’s mind that they should in the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Justin Fields rebounded from his performance against Indiana, throwing for two and running for two touchdowns. This week, the Buckeyes are scheduled to play the hapless Michigan Wolverines. However, if Michigan does not play due to Covid-19, it raises issues for Ohio State’s chances of playing in the Big Ten title game.
4. Clemson Tigers (9-1) Odds: from +250 to +275
Heading into their final game of the regular season on Saturday, the Clemson Tigers’ odds to win the national title were +250. However, their odds took a small dip to +275, despite a 45-10 win over Virginia Tech. Since quarterback Trevor Lawrence has returned from COVID-19, the Tigers have outscored their last two opponents by a score of 97-27.
That being said, Clemson can increase their title odds if they can defeat Notre Dame on the 19th in the ACC title game. The last time these two teams played, Lawrence was not under center. It could be a very different ballgame with a CFB playoff spot on the line.
5. Texas A&M Aggies (7-1) Odds: from +1600 to +1800
The Aggies saw their odds go down as well, after their 31-20 win over the Auburn Tigers on Saturday. Texas A&M came into this weekend with +1600 odds to win the national title, which is not bad, but is a long shot considering the teams that are in front of them.
That being said, they still have a shot to improve them, but it’s going to be hard since they aren’t playing in the SEC title game. All they can do is win their last two games in dominating fashion and hope there’s a massive shakeup in the top four over the next two weeks.
6. Florida Gators (8-1) Odds: from +1200 to +1800
The Gators saw their national title game odds take a noticeable nosedive after their 31-19 win over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday. Florida came into the weekend with +1200 odds to win the entire thing. But seeing what they would have to do to get in, its tough to envision them in the College Football Playoff
For starters, they would have to defeat LSU next week and then defeat Alabama in the SEC title game. If they do those things then there’s a chance. But then you also have to factor in what happens with Ohio State, Clemson, and Notre Dame over these next two weeks. It is not an easy road for Kyle Trask and Co.
