The 2020 Oscar winners were all the favorites, and then Parasite stunned everyone

It was a pretty chalky Oscars for the first three hours — and then it got crazy. For the first time in the history of the Academy Awards, a foreign language film won Best Picture as Parasite was the upset winner at the 2020 Oscars.

Bong Joon-Ho’s film about the class system in South Korean and two families on opposite sides of the divide was the toast of the evening. Joon-Ho was also honored as Best Director, and as the writer of the film he also won for Best Original Screenplay. Obviously the film won Best International Film as well.

There were only four upsets according to the betting odds on the evening. Two of them were by Parasite: Joon-Ho winning Best Director at +250 odds over Sam Mendes for 1917, and the film Best Picture at +200 beating out 1917 at -155. The odds actually closed from even larger numbers, with Parasite opening at +450. The other smaller surprises were Best Live Action Short Film for The Neighbour’s Window at +100, and Best Sound Editing for Ford v. Ferrari at +150.

In the four acting categories, all the heavy favorites came out victorious as Brad Pitt, Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix, and Renee Zellweger were all awarded their expected statues. It was an overwhelmingly good night for the chalk, but a late surge from a film with subtitles changed everything at the end.
