The DC Defenders improved to 2-0 on Saturday as they beat the New York Guardians by a final score of 27-0. DC was a touchdown favorite and the point total sat at 46.5. DC easily covered the spread and for the fourth time in five XFL games, the under hit on the point total. New York dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
While DC quarterback Cardale Jones stepped up once again, this game was about the suffocating Defenders defense. Guardians quarterback Matt McGloin scuffled all day long before he was eventually benched for Marquise Williams. McGloin completed 8-of-19 passes for 44 yards with two interceptions, including a pick-six. He was sacked once and tackled at the line of scrimmage on another play. Williams completed four of eight passes for 51 yards in place of McGloin. MeKale McKay led the team with three receptions for 30 yards. Tim Cook rushed ten times for 39 yards.
Jones had a strong day for DC. He threw for 276 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The pick came on a bad deflection off one of his receivers. Rashad Ross led DC with 95 yards on four receptions, and the team welcomed back DeAndre Thompkins, who caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Donnel Pumphrey led the team with 52 rushing yards and Jhurell Pressley added 32 more.
