The XFL returns for Week 3! The league took a hit in the TV ratings in Week 2, but that was to be expected with the novelty worn off after Week 1. The league will at some point needs its ratings to level off to in turn find some sustained success.
Week 2 brought a mixed bag of football. We’ve got a couple teams that appear to be really good in the Houston Roughnecks and DC Defenders. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Vipers appear to be really bad for the time being, the St. Louis BattleHawks are better than expected, and the remaining four teams have their share of questions to answer.
Week 3 brings some notable matchups that will tell us more about a few of the questionable teams. Dallas and quarterback Landry Jones travel to face Seattle. Jones made his debut last week after missing Week 1 with an injury. He looked solid and will look to build on that against a shaky Dragons team. If Jones is legit, Dallas will move into the top half of the league’s competitors.
In Southern California, winless LA hosts 2-0 DC in a matchup that will tell us more about Josh Johnson. The veteran NFL quarterback made his debut last week and struggled a bit before catching on in the fourth quarter. He faces arguably the toughest defense in the league this week, and LA badly needs a win to get in the playoff race.
The XFL will once again be featuring four nationally televised games, with two of them on broadcast network stations, and two on cable. The weekend opens with Tampa Bay hosting Houston at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, airing on ABC. Seattle hosts Dallas at 5:00 p.m. that evening on FOX. On Sunday, ESPN will air New York vs. St. Louis at 3:00 p.m., and FS1 will air DC vs. Los Angeles at 6:00 p.m.
The league is leaning heavily into the gambling space, and has announced DraftKings SportsBook as a sports betting partner. DK is also a daily fantasy football partner with the league, so we’ll be providing updates through the weekend to get you ready for Week 3 XFL action.
