We’re in Week three of the XFL, and Saturday’s first game will be between the piping hot Houston Roughnecks (2-0) and the struggling Tampa Bay Vipers (0-2). One side has a dynamic offense and looks like a legitimate title contender while the other is looking to get the ball rolling before things get too out of hand in the league’s 10-week season.
This matchup will be Saturday’s first, and it will kick off at 2:00 p.m. ET at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. It will be broadcast on ABC and also available for streaming on the ESPN Sports App.
The Roughnecks’ P.J. Walker has been one of the XFL’s most pleasant surprises so far this year. He won Houston’s starting quarterback job from Connor Cook just days before Week 1 and has been one of the most productive players to grace the field. He leads the XFL in passing touchdown passes (7) and quarterback rating (107.4) and has a plethora of options at wide receiver in Cam Phillips, Kahlil Lewis, and Sammie Coates. Tampa Bay is in for a real challenge.
The Vipers have only managed to put 12 points on the board this season, and things aren’t getting any easier. Starting quarterback Aaron Murray (foot) and tight end Nick Truesdell (knee) are both out for Week 3, so the team’s offensive firepower won’t be close to full strength. Backup signal callers Taylor Cornelius and Quinton Flowers haven’t been suitable replacements, so keeping up with Houston’s often-rapid scoring pace should be difficult.
Surprisingly, the Roughnecks are only 6.5-point favorites. The over/under for the contest is set at 44.5. If it does reach that total point, Houston will likely carry most of the scoring load.
