The Morning Line February 23rd: Maryland vs. Ohio State, Penn State vs. Indiana

Two Big Ten battles highlight a big day of top-tier college basketball

The Big Ten takes center stage today with two games at noon that will affect the conference championship race as well as the NCAA Tournament bubble.

No. 9 Penn State heads to Indiana at 12:00 p.m. with the Hoosiers at 17-9 and 7-8 in the toughest league in college basketball. IU is probably safe because they play a Top 30 team basically every night, but a win today would for sure get them off the 9-seed they’re projected by Jerry Palm right now. It would also show some strength for team that has lost five of its last seven, but to be fair those were all Q1 games, and most at the top of the quadrant as well. Penn State is laying a point on the road in early trading.

No. 25 Ohio State hosts No. 7 Maryland face off at 4:30 p.m. ET in Columbus, and a win for the Terps will get them either two or three games ahead of Penn State in the B1G conference championship race with four to play. With San Diego State being stunned last night at home by a very bad UNLV team, there might be room on the No. 1 line for a Big Ten Champion if they can back that up with a run in the conference tournament. It seems almost silly to have a league that’s going to get as many as 11 bids to the NCAA Tournament not have their winner on the top line, but the parity in the league is that strong where it might happen. It’s also why the higher-ranked home team is giving 2.5 points today.

Two American Conference bubble teams trending in opposite directions face off in The Shoe today when Wichita State takes on Cincinnati. WSU has won three in a row to get on the 11-seed line and out of Dayton according to Jerry Palm, but Cincinnati is amongst the first four out after an OT win over a terrible ECU, and an OT loss at home to a pedestrian UCF. Their NCAA fates could flip depending on the result today, with the Shockers catching four on the road as of now.
