The XFL wrapped up its third week, and we had our first big upset of the season. The Los Angeles Wildcats thrashed the DC Defenders, handing quarterback Cardale Jones his first loss as a starting quarterback since he was in high school.
DraftKings Sportsbook posted their latest XFL Championship odds, and Houston has claimed the top spot by a decent margin. The Roughnecks got a tough fight from what had been an awful Tampa Bay Vipers team, but P.J. Walker once again shined in victory. Houston’s defense isn’t particularly good, but nobody has been able to keep pace with an offense led by Walker and Cam Phillips. With the win, Houston improved from +250 to +200 to win the title.
DC dropped to +350 with their loss in Los Angeles. DC travels to face Tampa Bay in Week 4, which is a prime bounce-back spot. DC is likely not as bad as they looked on Sunday, but they’ll need to show they can bounce back and not get sucked into some downward momentum.
The St. Louis BattleHawks have claimed first place in the XFL East due to touchdown differential, but oddsmakers are not quite ready to crown them as the better team over DC. They improved to +500 with their 29-9 win over the New York Guardians, which is a far cry from when they were tied for the worst odds at +1200 heading into Week 1.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Renegades saw a slight improvement to +550 with their win over Seattle. Landry Jones is a solid quarterback, but they have yet to face a stiff challenge. They beat LA the weekend before, but considering how well Josh Johnson looked in the fourth quarter of that game and then this week against DC, it would seem like he was shaking off rust for much of the start of the game. Dallas hosts Houston in a matchup with huge XFL West implications.
LA holds considerable value at +800. Johnson looked phenomenal in the Week 3 win over DC, but they have a hole to climb out of in the next few weeks. Only two teams from each division make the playoffs, and right now they’re behind Houston and Dallas in the XFL West. It’s hard to see Houston missing the playoffs, and Dallas is steadily chugging along now that Jones is starting. LA still has to face Houston and Dallas a second time, and that matchup with Dallas is the final week of the regular season. It could be a pretty huge matchup if these teams continue at their current rates.
