The XFL heads into Week 4, and this is very much a passing league. With the rules and performances to date, it’s becoming clear that teams are leaning on their passing game more than their ground game — and that bodes well for wide receivers and tight ends.
I believe I wrote somewhere last week that we can’t expect another three touchdown game from Cam Phillips in Week 3, and I was 100 percent incorrect. Phillips followed up his dominant Week 2 performance with an even more dominant performance in Week 3, catching 8-of-10 targets for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Phillips now has seven touchdowns through three games. He’s tied for the most receptions and targets at 20/29, and also leads in yardage and touchdowns.
Tre McBride, who missed Week 1 and 2 with an injury, has shot up the ranks with a big Week 3 game. He caught 5-of-6 targets for 109 yards and two touchdowns and his one missed target was a deep bomb that he dropped. Josh Johnson was on target all game and McBride was open all game. McBride took over as the No. 1 receiver, as Nelson Spruce saw his fewest targets of the season with four, but he still caught three for 75 yards.
After a huge Week 1, the Seattle Dragons’ receiver Austin Proehl took a back seat to Keenan Reynolds in Week 2, but reasserted himself in Week 3 with another big game. He caught 6-of-7 targets for 81 yards and a touchdown, giving him three scores on the season.
The best offensive tight end in the league has been Donald Parnham, who now has 14 receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Getting Landry Jones back has been a big boon for his numbers, as he’s topped 76 yards in each game and scored three total touchdowns since his return in Week 2.
