Week 3 of the XFL had some lopsided affairs, but it was good to see the Tampa Bay Vipers and LA Wildcats break out of their offensive slumps, with the Wildcats doing so in a big way with six touchdowns and a win over the previously undefeated DC Defenders.
There aren’t any good ownership numbers to mine our Week 3 waiver wire picks from, so we’ll be playing it by ear. Some of the repeat big names are not going to be available at this point, but, if you are in an XFL league, there’s a good chance many of Week 3’s top performers are on waivers, so you’ve got a chance to find some talent.
Running Backs
Marquez Carter, L.A. Wildcats
Carter came out of nowhere to put up 75 yards and three touchdowns, two on the ground and one through the air in Week 3. He got the bulk of the Wildcats running back work with Elijah Hood out due to injury. Hood had been the main back in the first two weeks, but hadn’t done much with his touches. It’s hard to judge Hood to harshly, as the Wildcats weren’t very good in their first two games overall. There’s a good chance that Hood returns to the lead role but Carter undoubtedly won himself some work and appears to have better receiving chops than Hood.
Darius Victor, NY Guardians
Victor returned from his concussion and looked like the best player on a very bad team in Week 3. He out-touched Tim Cook 12-9 and if it weren’t for a 33 yard run from Cook down by 23 points in the third-quarter, he would have out-gained him by much more than the 11 yards he topped him by. These two will continue to split time, but Victor will also continue to see targets and should have more overall value moving forward.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
Tre McBride, LA Wildcats
If McBride was dropped after missing the first two weeks, you should grab him ASAP. McBride led the team in targets, receptions, yards and touchdowns in Week 3, pushing Nelson Spruce down the target totem pole. Spruce still went for 75 yards but on just three receptions. Spruce is still very much a player you want, especially with Josh Johnson looking so good, but McBride may have overtaken him this week.
Jalen Tolliver, Tampa Bay Vipers
Tolliver had a slow start to the season, but Week 3 was a nice breakout game against the Roughnecks. He led the team with 13 targets and caught eight for 104 yards. The Vipers are bad, but they’re going to continue to throw the ball and help a receiver or two find fantasy value each week.
Defense/Special Teams
L.A. Wildcats
After some poor performances to start the season, head coach Winston Moss had his team ready to go in Week 3, as they intercepted Cardale Jones four times in route to a rout. Moss let his defensive coordinator go after Week 1 and appears to have righted the ship. And this week they take on the Guardians and whoever they shuffle out there at quarterback.
Quarterbacks
Josh Johnson, LA Wildcats
I’m assuming Johnson is rostered in most leagues, but he looked so good in Week 3 that I would take him over every quarterback other than P.J. Walker at this point. He completed 18-of-25 passes, but two were dropped. His accuracy was outstanding, especially compared to the league average and he has the second-best deep ball completion percentage in the league and the fourth-most deep passes, despite only playing in two games.
