There is a lot of college basketball on the last Saturday before the conference tournament season begins, so we take a look at some of the best value available.
No. 24 Michigan State heads to No. 9 Maryland in a quest to keep the Terrapins from clinching at least a share the Big Ten regular season championship. With a win, UM goes to 14-4 in conference play, with a magic number of just 1 over the four teams that enter today at 11-6. Senior point guard Anthony Cowan will be looked upon as a leader come NCAA Tournament time, and he’s been one of the best backcourt players in America this season.
Right now the Terps are a three-point favorite at home against a Michigan State team that earns an assist on 65.7% of their made baskets to lead the NCAA’s Division I.
No. 7 Duke is off to Charlottesville to face Virginia, who appear to have gotten off the bubble for now with five straight ACC wins. That gets the league to four likely NCAA teams, which certainly isn’t up to the usual Tobacco Road standard, but not the disaster the conference was looking at in terms of revenue units earlier this season. The Blue Devils have lost two of their last three, but are four-point favorites on the road despite these teams trending in opposite directions.
Maybe the most interesting major conference game today is Arizona looking for revenge at UCLA. The Bruins shocked the Wildcats three Saturdays ago in Tucson, and it started a string of six straight PAC-12 wins for Mick Cronin and his team that has them miraculously flirting with the bubble at 18-11, 11-5 in the league. But there’s still work to be done because of the weakness of the Conference of Champions this season, so Pauley Pavilion might need to host another upset to keep the dream alive. As of now the home team will be 2.5 point underdogs at tip-off, and that’s with UCLA guard Prince Ali listed as questionable.
