The Dallas Renegades are coached by former Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops. Former Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones, who played for Stoops, will be the quarterback. Stoops brought in offensive coordinator Hal Mumme, who is one of the founders of the “Air Raid” offense.
There are plenty of interesting names on the Renegades, including a few NFL players you will recognize.
Landry Jones, QB, (Pittsburgh Steelers)
Jones was the first player to sign a contract with the XFL and will reunite with his old coach Bob Stoops. Jones was drafted by the Steelers in in 2013 in the fourth round. Jones played sparingly for the Steelers but did have a few good appearances and finished his time with the Steelers with five starts and 18 total appearances in three season. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,310 yards, 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
Unfortunately, Jones hurt his knee and is questionable to play Week 1. If he can’t go, Philip Nelson, who played in the AAF, would likely get the start.
Cameron Artis-Payne, RB, (Carolina Panthers)
Artis-Payne had success at Auburn, earning first-team All-SEC honors and was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round. He was a backup for the Panthers from 2015 to 2018 and finished his NFL career with 118 rushing attempts for 491 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 10 passes for 86 yards.
Lance Dunbar, RB, (Dallas Cowboys)
Dunbar put up big numbers at the University of North Texas, breaking multiple school records. He was passed over in the 2012 draft, but did end up signing as an UDFA with the Cowboys. Dunbar played six season with the Cowboys, rushing 105 times for 473 yards and two touchdowns, while catching 69 passes for 647 yards. His ability as a receiver should come in handy in the Renegades up-tempo, Air Raid offense.
Jazz Ferguson, WR, (Seattle Seahawks)
Ferguson is 6’5” and ran a 4.45 at the combine after putting up a strong senior year at Northwestern State, which had plenty of scouts taking another look at him, but he ultimately went undrafted and signed with the Seahawks. He flashed a bit in training camp, but ultimately didn’t make the team. His size and speed make him a difficult receiver to cover and Mumme’s offense should give him plenty of opportunities to make plays.
