After an offseason full of trade rumors, the Boston Red Sox finally made the move. The team traded Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-team deal that included David Price and brought prospect Alex Verdugo back to Boston.
The trade was a salary dump to avoid a luxury tax penalty, which is kind of ridiculous considering the kind of money backing the Red Sox, as well as the revenue they bring in each year. The Red Sox were expected to be in the hunt for the World Series, but this changes expectations considerably. They are still a talented team, but trading Betts removes one of the best homegrown prospects in franchise history.
It should surprise nobody then that the Red Sox various odds at DraftKings Sportsbook took a hit following the trade. At the same time, the Dodgers got a bump in NL and World Series futures. The Red Sox dropped from +2200 to +3300 to win the whole thing, and their win total dropped from 88.5 to 85.5 The Dodgers improved their World Series odds from +500 to +400, and saw their win total rise from 97.5 to 100.5. They are second only to the Yankees in preseason win total.
